How did the pre-engineered buildings evolve from metal buildings

by Civil Engineering design, Pre-design

Metal buildings and Pre-Engineered Buildings are used as standard terminologies in the construction industry. The main elements in a structure are the wall, roof, frames, and braces. The exterior finish of these can be a mix of wood, shingles, concrete, etc. The best quality of these buildings is that it is durable and resistant to fire. The first record of metal buildings is from 1796. Until, then workmen used timber. Once the Industrial civil consultants understood the advantages of metal buildings, they replaced wood with cast-iron structures.

Pre- PEB steel building era

The nineteenth-century saw architects and builders use iron as a material for framing, and as the production of it was expensive both concerning labor and money, there was not much progress. But by the middle of the nineteenth century, rolled iron beams came into existence. Then, there was an increase in its popularity. From then on, there was no looking back, a significant invention by Henry Bessemer, where iron could be transformed into steel happened, and later, there were many innovative designs state, some Industrial civil consultants. By 1901, the Model T was a rage, and there was a need for a garage to safeguard it. Butler Manufacturing, an enterprise that manufactured prefabricated products for agriculture, started designing Prefabricated metal buildings by using folded metal sheets over frames, and that became their signature building design, which influenced the modern structures.

Pre-Engineered Buildings Era

By the end of the nineteenth century, there were many iron houses  and also steel frame skyscrapers. Many years before World War II, steel buildings were used for storage in the oil industry, and during the war, these were used as military shelters. But it was Austin Company situated in Cleveland, which pre-engineered a few building designs for commercial structures and cataloged it. That brought about a revolution as the construction industry started to process orders which could be shipped to sites within weeks. Since there was no need for a design phase, there was a reduction in the time for the buildings to come up.

PEB steel building now in India:

There have been tremendous technological improvements in the construction industry. This has helped in computerizing the designs done in papers. Only off the shelf products with fixed configurations were available initially in India. But, Industrial civil consultants were using the technology to provide solutions quickly. Though the PEB system came to India only in the 1990s, there is a tremendous compound growth in its use. Industrial civil consultants are coming up with great designs. They are of good quality and also aesthetically appealing. Since the rules for building design are stringent, the structures are safe.

Pre-engineered buildings are not high rise buildings, and the maximum height is up to 30 meters. Hence it is suitable for houses, showrooms, offices, schools, etc. which are a low rise. When Industrial civil consultants apply the Pre Engineered Buildings system concept to such structures, the construction turns out to be fast as well as cost-effective. These structures further compliment other construction systems aiding the completion of building in less than half the regular time.
