Why do consultants for industrial fire safety recommend gas suppression system in critical areas?

by Architecture design, Fire and Safety, FRMS

A gas suppression system is a fire safety system that suppresses fire with the help of gases. Consultants for industrial fire safety recommend a Gas suppression system for areas where water can damage the electronic equipment. So, this suppression system is used for server rooms, data centres, power stations, and electrical rooms.

The gas suppression system uses gaseous suppression agents to suppress the fire. The components in a gas suppression system include the agent, storage containers, release valves, fire detectors, agent delivery piping and dispersion nozzles.

How does the gas suppression system work?

This gas suppression system releases a mix of gas on detecting fire. These gases eliminate the agents that contribute to the fire. The two main ways how a gas suppression system works are by:

  1. It reduces the level of oxygen. It minimises the Oxygen level by more than 15%, and as a result, the fire cannot sustain itself.
  2. When released from the system, the gases form a mixture of air. This mixture absorbs more heat as compared with air alone. The chain reaction breaks, and the fire is suppressed.

What are the benefits of a gas suppression system?

In industries, fire risk management of critical areas is essential. Sometimes, water can be equally damaging as the fire. Hence, in areas where water may cause damage, it is necessary to put in a fire suppression system.

The benefits are as follows:

  1. The gas suppression system acts effectively to extinguish the fire and reduce damage.
  2. The smoke and soot are less in the gas suppression system.
  3. It helps extinguish an electrical fire.
  4. Cleaning after a fire incident is easier.
  5. Evacuation of the room is not necessary to start fire extinguishing
  6. Water consumption is less and hence environmentally friendly.
  7. Moreover, the gas suppression system works well in areas with sensitive data and equipment.

To conclude, the consultants for fire safety in industrial projects recommend gas suppression systems because of the benefits. Additionally, the suppressing agent doesn’t damage the equipment, unlike water.
