What are sprinkler systems?

Sprinkler systems are one of the most commonly used fire protection systems by industrial fire protection consultants. Sprinkler systems are active fire protection system components that detect heat. When the temperature in the area rises, the bulb in the sprinkler breaks and activates the sprinkler head. However, there are misconceptions that smoke triggers sprinkler systems.  The sprinkler system is an essential part of the fire risk management system.

The sprinkler system is a piping system on the ceiling that has water under pressure constantly. The sprinklers are located at select places. When the temperature rises triggers, the sprinkler has a steady flow of water flows.

Types of Sprinklers

  1. Wet Type: The triggering of the sprinkler head releases water.
  2. Dry-type: The water is stored behind an electronically controlled valve. The dry type sprinklers are suitable for cold climates.
  3. Deluge type: The fire alarm releases the water. The flow stopped manually by turning the valve. Typically, the deluge type of sprinkler works in industries that use flammable liquids.

What are the uses of Sprinkler systems?

The industrial fire protection consultants design a fire protection system based on the project requirements. A temperature of 135-165 degrees Fahrenheit triggers the fire sprinklers.

  • They suppress smoke and flames.
  • The sprinkler system reduces damage till the local fire authorities arrive. It helps in containing the fire at the start.
  • Each sprinkler is activated individually. This also reduces water wastage especially in case there is a false alarm.
  • They bring down the loss of life or property.
  • The sprinkler system enables the occupants to leave the building safely.

However, the client has to maintain the sprinkler system properly for it to work at all times. Moreover, the sprinkler performance in fire accidents depend on:

  • The characteristics of the sprinkler and sprinkler system
  • The age of the system.
  • Proper maintenance
  • Proper installation
  • Properly designed system
  • Changes in the building use
  • Building design
  • Water supply changes

Sprinkler systems are essential in industries. Additionally, the sprinkler system is necessary as per fire rules and regulations. So, all industrial fire protection consultants design sprinklers in industries.
